Who We Are
Our History
The Association of Baptists for World Evangelism (ABWE) started their medical missionary work in the Philippines in 1946 particularly in Bukidnon with Rev. Henry De Vries and his wife Gladys who is a nurse. Two other nurses namely Rhoda Little and Jeanne Wagner Tentarelli joined them. They had set up an outpatient dispensary (four room framed structure with thick cogon roof) after the war, but only Jeanne was still there in 1951 to introduce the new missionaries to the work: Ron & Laura (Davie) Esson. Ron was a pharmacist and “Davie” a nurse. In March of 1952 they were joined by Dr. Lincoln D. Nelson and his wife Lenore (a nurse) as members of ABWE medical team.

It did not take long for them to realize that the workplace was insufficient. A building program was begun and in the latter part of 1953 a cement block Clinic replaced the dispensary and become the first structure of Bethel Baptist Hospital. In 1955 the second wing was added and named the Infirmary with nine hospital beds, a laboratory and an operating room. Personnel were added, as the work demanded. The third phase of the project was finished in 1971 with upgraded facilities including operating and delivery rooms, bringing the bed capacity to twenty. In December 2, 1973 the Bethel Baptist Hospital Board of Trustees agreed to file an Application for Incorporation with the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission and was granted S.E.C. Registration No. 53466 on December 17, 1973. As the ministry grew, so was the need for more facilities, thus, over the years, new buildings and equipment were added to accommodate the expanding medical needs of the community.
As a non-stock, non-profit indigenous mission institution affiliated with the Association of Fundamental Baptist Churches in the Philippines (AFBCP), our primary purpose is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to patients by providing optimum medical health services.
